GPS and GNSS
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a widely deployed and accepted way to determine location precisely without needing to rely on coverage or signal strength of cellular networks. It therefore underpins navigation, tracking and tracing of a wide variety of goods and assets and billions of GNSS IoT devices are now deployed worldwide.
GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the overarching technology that encompasses multiple satellite constellations from various countries and regions. GPS (Global Positioning System), developed and maintained by the United States, is one of the constituent systems within GNSS. Other global systems such as Russia's GLONASS, the European Union's Galileo, and China's BeiDou also contribute to the GNSS network.
Continual advancements in GNSS technology, including the integration of additional satellite constellations and improvements in receiver designs, hold the promise of even more precise and reliable positioning data in the future. This ongoing progress opens up exciting opportunities in areas like asset tracking, autonomous vehicles, precision agriculture, industrial PDAs, wearables, remote monitoring and location-based services, among others.
